BELAGAVI: About 50 vehicles were damaged and a senior citizen was killed in two separate incidents as trees uprooted in the city due to heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds.
The incidents occurred at club road, even as police and corporation officials rushed to the spot. The city has been witnessing heavy downpour since evening.
Sixty five-year-old Vijay Kolhapure was passing by in his scooter when a tree collapsed on him. He died on the spot even as onlookers immediately rushed to rescue him.
He is a resident of Kali Amrai and retired HESCOM official. The DCP law and order Ravindra Gadadi talking to TOI said, “senior citizen died on the spot due to the impact of the tree that fell on him.”
In another incident on the same road, a massive tree fell on parked two wheelers causing the damage.
Many commuters parked their vehicle to take shelter at the nearby shops as it was heavily raining. A witness said “we were standing near the shop and suddenly the tree uprooted and fell on the ground due to winds. The tree came crashing on the vehicles.”
Several trees and electric poles are also uprooted and HESCOM workers are pressed into action to repair the damages.
