The accused has been identified as Surendra Kumar aka Babu and the deceased is his son Arpit Setia.
According to police sources, Setia had taken over his father’s fabrication business three years ago and was unable to run it properly. He borrowed over Rs 1.5 crore to run his business apart from using the rent he got from a building in Byatarayanapura off Mysuru Road.
The worried father began demanding accounts of the business and Arpit reportedly declined to provide the same. This led to a clash between the duo.
Neighbours noticed the duo shouting at each other inside their godown for over 30 minutes. Arpit came out of the godown after his father poured thinner on him.
A nearby CCTV camera captured Babu light a matchstick but failed to throw it on Arpit. But the second time around, he succeeded. Soon Arpit was engulfed in flames. He ran around screaming that his father had set him ablaze.
Locals doused the fire. Arpit was rushed to the burns ward in Victoria Hospital in an autorickshaw. Doctors said he had sustained 60% burns and breathed his last on Thursday morning.
According to preliminary investigation, the father and son had been fighting for almost a year. A senior officer said that Arpit was not maintaining the accounts properly and Babu used to often ask him about business accounts. Arpit refused to share details with him.
Arpit borrowed around Rs 12,000 on April 1 and brought thinner. Babu questioned him about the account related to Rs 12,000 and also not giving him the details of the business. In a fit of rage, Babu poured thinner on Arpit and set him ablaze.
Sanjeev M Patil, deputy commissioner of police (west) said that the accused has been arrested for murder.
Police registered a case of murder based on a complaint filed by eyewitness Ambarish, a truck driver and neighbour. Further probe is under way.
