Gujarat: Nine Pakistan nationals held with drugs worth Rs 280 crore | Ahmedabad News – Times of India

Two to three crew members received minor injuries.

AHMEDABAD: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) apprehended a Pakistani boat with nine crew members on board in the Arabian Sea near the state coast and seized 56kg heroin worth Rs 280 crore from the vessel, a defence spokesperson said on Monday.
A top police officer said that the Coast Guard had to fire some shots at the boat as it tried to escape after being challenged by the interceptor ship. Two to three crew members received minor injuries.
The Coast Guard ship intercepted and apprehended the Pakistani boat ‘Al Haj’ early Monday morning from the Indian waters, the defence spokesperson said in a statement. Officials found heroin worth Rs 280 crore on the boat, the statement said, adding that the boat and the crew members were brought to the Jakhau port in Gujarat’s Kutch district for further investigation.
Gujarat director general of police (DGP) Ashish Bhatia said the seizure took place on the Indian side of the Arabian sea during the wee hours of Monday, nearly 15 nautical miles away from the International Maritime Boundary Line (IMBL).
He said the Coast Guard personnel had to fire some shots at the Pakistani boat as the crew tried to escape after being challenged by the interceptor ship.
“Based on a tip-off given by the ATS, a Coast Guard ship headed towards IMBL and spotted the Pakistani boat sailing in the Indian waters after crossing the IMBL. Since the Pak crew tried to speed away with their boat after being challenged, the Coast Guard fired some rounds on them during a chase,” Bhatia said at the ATS headquarters in Chharodi on SG road in the city on Monday.
Investigation has found that Karachi-based smuggler Mustafa was behind this racket. The contraband would have been transported to a northern state had they succeeded in smuggling it in, Bhatia said. This was the second big haul of heroin within the week. Earlier, on Thursday, the Gujarat ATS and DRI had seized nearly 260kg of heroin worth Rs 1,300 crore from Kandla police which had already landed there around six months ago.
Sources in the ATS and ICG said that three of the nine crew members suffered bullet injuries in the firing, and they were not shown in the different pictures released by the two agencies. However, the agency officers said that they suffered minor injuries only.
The ship was taken to Jakhau port late on Monday evening.x
